Description

Magnesite, presented here as polished stones, is a mineral primarily composed of magnesium carbonate. These samples, white with brown or golden veins, clearly illustrate the characteristic cracked texture of magnesite. The mineral is often used as a source of magnesium and in the manufacture of refractory materials. Initially discovered in Greece, to which it owes its name — derived from the city of Magnesia —, magnesite usually forms in sedimentary or metamorphic rocks. It is extracted in various regions around the world and has been exploited since antiquity for various industrial and decorative uses.
