Description

Dyed banded agate is a variety of agate, a mineral from the quartz family. Typically formed by the successive accumulation of silica layers in volcanic cavities, agate is characterized by its distinctive bands that can vary in color and transparency. These stones have been artificially dyed to intensify their color, a common practice to highlight the natural banding of this stone. Known since antiquity, agate was used as an ornamental stone and for seals. Its exploitation is mainly found in Brazil.
