Smoky brown quartz

The smoky quartz presented here is a translucent variety of quartz that has a brown tint due to the natural radiation exposure of clear quartz. These samples are polished to bring out their unique color, ranging from almost black to transparent brown. Smoky quartz has been used since antiquity, notably for making ornaments and in certain art objects. Primarily mined in Australia, Brazil, Madagascar, and the Swiss Alps, this mineral is appreciated for its robustness (Mohs scale 7) and its simple beauty.
