Carnelian is a variety of chalcedony, characterized by its reddish-orange color, due to the presence of iron oxide. This mineral, part of the quartz group, is renowned for its translucency and color variations ranging from pale pink to intense brownish-red. Historically, carnelian was used since antiquity for making seals, amulets, and jewelry, valued for its beauty and its ability to hold fine detail when engraved. The main deposits are found in India, Brazil, and Uruguay.
